A poor orphan named Maria
Was walking to one day
She stopped for a rest by the
a bird with a broken wing lay
A few moments passed she saw it
For it's feathers were covered sand
But soon clean and wrapped it was
In the warmth of Maria's small

She gave her last peso
On a cage of rushes and twine
She fed it loose corn the market
And watched it grow stronger time

Now the Christmas Eve service was
And the church shone with tinsel and
And all of the townfolks presents
To lay by the manger that
were diamonds and incense
And
In fit for a king
But for one ragged bird in a small
Maria had nothing to

She waited just before midnight
So no one see her go in
And crying she knelt by the
For her was unworthy of Him

Then a voice to her through the darkness
Maria, what you to me
If the bird in the cage is offering
Open the and let me see
she trembled, she did as He asked her
And out of the the bird flew
up into the rafters
On a wing had healed good as new

Just then the midnight bells out
And the bird started to sing
A song that no could recapture
beauty was fit for a king

Now Maria felt blessed just to
To that cascade of sweet and long
As her offerings was lifted to
By the very nightingale's song
